CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Choice felt the tightness in her feet. They were beginning to swell as she stood impatiently in the long line at the 7-11 waiting to pay for her gas. She looked down at her feet and was glad she had decided to wear flip-flops instead of heels or wedges. With her hand resting on her hip, she sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes in frustration. She had been standing in line a good five minutes and she was irritated beyond belief.

“Can you call for some assistance or some shit? Maybe the line would move a little faster if someone opened up the other register,” Choice blurted out rudely.

“Damn, you must be having a bad day because you’re not usually this mean.”

Choice smiled. She knew immediately who the voice belonged to. Choice turned around with glee in her voice and a smile on her face. “Wisdom?” she called him by his government.

“Damn you bigger than a muthafucka,” Wise said playfully. He chuckled when he looked down at her stomach.

“Shut up, Wise,” Choice said as she hit him on the arm.

“I’m just joking,” Wise smiled. “I never imagined you pregnant before. It looks good on you. You look beautiful, you know that? You don’t have a line going across your nose and your nose isn’t the size of a pickle. Your nose is still the same size it was before.”

Wise stepped back to get a good look at Choice. “Yeah, you still look the same minus the stomach and slightly fat feet. You’re perfect in my book. Always have been,” he said truthfully.

“Whatever, Wise. You’ll tell me anything.”

“Nah, seriously, all bullshit aside.”

“You’re always so full of compliments, aren’t you?” Choice asked.

“Only when one is deserving of them,” Wise said.

Choice shook her head as a smile began tugging at the corners of her lips. “Anyway, Wise, how have you been?”

“I’ve been good. I miss you,” he said seriously. “It’s been about two months since the last time I’ve seen you. That’s a long time, especially since we’ve never went that long without seeing or speaking to one another.”

“This is true,” she agreed with him.

“So how have you been? Is that nigga treating you right?” Wise asked.

“I’ve been good. He’s doing an awesome job. He’s treating me great.”

“That’s really good to hear. You getting gas? What pump you on?” he asked as he looked over at the door and out of the window in search of her Benz.

“I’m on pump nine,” she said as she unzipped her wallet.

“Put your money away. I got it.”

She put her wallet away reluctantly. There was no point and standing in line going back and forth about who was going to pay for her gas. She knew Wise wouldn’t back down so she let him pay for it. Wise took out a fifty-dollar bill and gave it to the clerk. She stood off to the side as she waited for him to pay for his items before they walked out of the gas station.
